All About Air France’s New Regular/Low Cost Carrier Joon

Shailen VermaPosted by

Air France recently announced that they would be starting a Low-Cost Carrier (LCC)/ Regular Carrier Mix called Joon who is supposed to gear towards Millenials, and they’re using Technology to appeal to Millenials more. As Someone who loves to look at Business Plans, I found Joons on Air Frances Investor Relations Page and it seems like their focus on only Millenials will probably be the death of them. Most Airlines appeals to a variety of consumer targets which drives their business while creating a bigger clientele base. Joon will only focus on customers between the Age 18-30, That’s about 1/3 of what a Legacy Airline would concentrate on. Joon is Kicking Off (As They Would Say It) on December 1st and flights are scheduled until Mid October 2018 (If they make it that long).

Their Routes

Joons Base European Routes will start on December 1st while their International Routes will start on May 4th and 5th:

Paris (CDG) – Barcelona (BCN), (European)

Outbound Timings: 7:10 AM, 9:40 AM, 12:30 PM, 3:05 PM, 5:25 PM, 5:55 PM, 8:55 PM

Inbound Timings: 6:35 AM, 9:40 AM, 12:10 PM, 3:05 PM, 5:35 PM, 7:55 PM, 8:25 PM

My Thoughts: Pretty Basic Route and seems like their most popular ones

Paris (CDG) – Berlin (TXL), (European)

Outbound Timings: 7:10 AM, 8:05 AM, 9:50 AM, 12:20 PM, 3:25 PM, 5:55 PM, 8:40 PM

Inbound Timings: 6:35 AM, 9:45 AM, 10:40 AM, 12:25 PM, 2:50 PM, 5:55 PM, 8:30 PM

My Thoughts: I think this route especially appeals to the increased rate of Millenials in both cities and is their 2nd Most Popular Route.

Paris (CDG) – Lisbon (LIS), (European)

Outbound Timings: 9:25 AM, 1:45 PM, 4:05 PM, 8:50 PM

Inbound Timings: 5:30 AM, 11:45 AM, 4:10 PM, 6:25 PM

My Thoughts: Not a lot of flights per day on this route and that 5:30 AM Flight Time is horrendous especially for Millenials. I think that this Route is their 3rd most Popular Route.

Paris (CDG) – Porto (OPO), (European)

Outbound Timing(s), Saturday Only: 7:20 AM

Inbound Timing(s), Saturday Only: 9:25 AM

My Thoughts: I think that 1 Flight a Day/Week is Joon setting themselves up for failure on this route. Other Airlines (Combined) have 12 other flights on this day with cheaper fares, and Joon only operates this flight on Saturdays which doesn’t make it a desirable option for Round Trip Travel. I wouldn’t be surprised if this route gets pulled within six months.

Paris (CDG) – Fortaleza, Brazil, (International on May 4th)

Outbound Timing(s), Saturday and Fridays Only: 1:10 PM

Inbound Timing(s), Saturday and Fridays Only: 7:35 PM

My Thoughts: Fortaleza? What’s That? I wouldn’t be surprised if you haven’t heard of Fortaleza, Brazil. Practically no foreigners have! Joon is trying to introduce a new vacation spot for Millennials that is currently only known by Brazilian Tourists.

Paris (CDG) – Mahé, Seychelles (SEZ), (International on May 5th)

Outbound Timing(s), Saturday, Mondays and Wednesdays Only: 10:10 AM

Inbound Timing(s), Sunday, Tuesdays and Thursdays Only: 12:20 AM

My Thoughts: Again, Not A lot of People have heard of this destination. It’s right off the Coast of East Africa and supposed to be beautiful. Joon is trying to introduce this vacation spot to Millennials as well. The weird thing is that it’s only competitor is Air France itself. Air France and Air Seychelles operate a  codeshare flight between Paris (CDG) and Mahé, Seychelles (SEZ) at around the same price point. So, it’s an interesting move from Joon. Maybe this is a sign that Air France is ending their codeshare on that route with Air Seychelles and fully endorsing Joon?

Cabins of Service

Joon has Two Cabins of Service that are currently published which are:

Intra European Routes:

International Routes:

It looks like Joon will be operating a Lie-Flat Business Class cabin in a 2-2-2 configuration.

I think that Joon is a very interesting idea as a Air France Subsidiary (BTW, Air France already has a LCC called Transavia France). But, they don’t have enough clientele for these routes as their only targeting a 12 year range of people while other airlines have better prices and a bigger clientele. I’m excited to watch Joon start in December and see how it goes. I might even try them out sometime!
